Islamophobic Remarks :

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Bharatendra Singh hails from Uttar Pradesh (UP). From the Bijnor constituency in Uttar Pradesh, he has served as a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) twice and as a member of Parliament once. In addition, he served as Uttar Pradesh’s previous state minister for irrigation.

At least 62 people, predominantly Muslims, were killed and 50,000 people were displaced in the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots. Singh was charged with instigating anti-Muslim violence during this period.

Prior to the violence, Singh gave provocative statements at a panchayat meeting in Nagla Mandaur village, disobeying prohibition orders and inciting communal strife. Later, he was taken into custody and imprisoned.

Charges against Singh and other BJP leaders were dropped in March 2021 as a result of the Yogi government’s request to have the cases withdrawn from a local court.
