Islamophobic Remarks :
Currently serving as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s Member of Legislative (MLA) for the Thanabhawan assembly constituency is Suresh Rana. He has served as the constituency’s MLA for two terms.
He was among those charged with encouraging anti-Muslim violence in the wake of the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, which claimed 50,000 lives and resulted in the deaths of at least 62 individuals, most of them Muslims.
Rana was charged with making hate speech directed at Muslims, disobeying prohibition orders, organizing a mahapanchayat without the district administration’s consent, obstructing public officials from carrying out their duties, and setting a motorcycle on fire.
On September 21, 2013, he was taken into custody on charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Criminal Law Amendment Act, specifically sections 188 (knowingly disobeying orders to maintain public order), 153 A (promoting enmity between groups on the basis of religion), 353 (provoking with intent to cause riots), and 435 (damage to property), which are non-bailable offenses. However, bail was quickly granted for him.
Even though Rana still had cases related to the Muzaffarnagar riots outstanding against him, the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP administration granted him cabinet position in 2019.
Charges against Rana and other Hindutva activists were withdrawn in March 2021 as a result of a local court request from the BJP government.
