Islamophobic Remarks :
Self-described Hindutva activist Ragini Tiwari, also known as “Janki behen,” publicly advocates for violence against minorities, particularly Muslims in India. Tiwari’s background is primarily unknown, although she identifies as a proud “Maithili,” a language spoken in the northern and eastern regions of Bihar.
She does, however, concentrate a lot of her political work on Delhi. Tiwari stated she isn’t connected to any political party in an interview with News24 on February 29. She says in a another video that she supported Laxmi Nagar BJP candidate Abhay Verma during the Delhi Assembly elections earlier this year.
Tiwari is regarded as one of the main masterminds behind the February 2020 pogrom in Delhi, which claimed the lives of at least 53 people—mostly Muslims—and injured 500 more. In the lead-up to the riots, she gave strongly sectarian statements on Facebook Live and engaged in stone-throwing with Hindu rioters in front of Maujpur police officers on February 23, 2020.
“Enough tirades against Hinduism. We will no longer put up with such assaults. Hindus, open up. Kill or perish. We’ll see the rest later. In a Facebook live, Tiwari added, “If your blood hasn’t boiled even now, it’s water, not blood.”
On the evening of February 23, 2020, in North East Delhi, at the Mohan Nursing Home close to the Bhajanpura Petrol Pump, another witness saw her fire bullets, striking someone in the head.
The first to shoot at us was Ragini Tiwari, and the bullet struck a boy standing there in the head. Confusion resulted from this. There was stone-pelting and gunfire after that. I ran home at this point, an eyewitness stated.
In a June 2020 Facebook live, Tiwari acknowledged that she had “cleaned out Jafrabad,” so acknowledging her complicity in the pogrom.
Yes, I cleared out Jaffrabad for the sake of my nation and faith, and I don’t regret it. If I live, I promise to eliminate Shaheen Bagh and Jaffrabad [circumstances] in my own unique way each time they arise,” the woman declared.
Even with abundant evidence and several complaints, the Delhi police decided not to press charges against Tiwari.
Tiwari posted a new video in December 2020, threatening to transform the current farmers’ protest into another Jafrabad, a reference to an anti-Muslim riot that took place in Delhi.
“If the government doesn’t get rid of the farmers’ protest by December 16, then on February 17, Ragini Tiwari will create another Jafrabad and again clear the roads. Whatever happens, the Centre, the state government, and the Delhi Police will be responsible. My sisters get ready… Nationalists, come out and support me,” she said.
