Sarbananda Sonowal

Islamophobic Remarks :

Sarbananda Sonowal, an alt-right and racial supremacist, led Assam as chief minister from 2016 to 2021. Prior to joining the right-wing Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Sonowal, a former student leader, held a prominent position in the Assamese nationalist Assam Gana Parishad (AGP).

When the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act, which required the complainant against a supposed foreigner to contribute a minimal fee when registering the complaint, was invalidated by the Supreme Court of India in 2005 in response to Sonowal’s plea, the lawmaker gained enormous notoriety in Assam.

Before the 2021 assembly elections, Sonowal, a member of the Kachari tribe, served as both the state’s chief minister and the BJP president. But in order to make room for Brahmin politician Himanta Biswa Sarma, he resigned from government. Sonowal is presently holding AYUSH and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways within the cabinet of Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi.

Sonowal announced that constitutional rights would not be awarded to individuals who do not make it onto the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list. Only updated in Assam after 1951, the NRC seeks to distinguish between legitimate natives and suspected illegal foreigners. More than 19 lakh persons were omitted from the citizenship list in the NRC, which was issued under the supervision of the Supreme Court during Sonowal’s administration.

Apparently a quiet dude Being a tribal himself, Sonowal is recognized for having created a special synthesis between the Assamese tribals and Hindutva nationalists.

The two-time MLA and MP is seen as having strong ties to extreme Hindutva supporters, including as Amit Shah, the home minister, and Prime Minister Modi.

“He is the representative of illegal migrants. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) came into being in 2005 after the IMDT [Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal)] Act was repealed in 2005 by a Supreme Court order. The group is an assembly of 14 Muslim fundamentalist groups.”
