Islamophobic Remarks :
Hardline Hindu politician Umesh Malik hails from Budhana, Uttar Pradesh. He currently serves as an MLA for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, representing the Budhana assembly constituency.
He stands accused of encouraging anti-Muslim violence in the wake of the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, which claimed 50,000 lives and killed at least 62 people, most of them being Muslims.
His involvement in rioting led to his detention. A local court issued non-bailable warrants for Malik’s arrest in December 2017. He was charged with making hateful remarks and taking part in a Mahapanchyat. In addition, he was charged under other IPC sections for disobeying prohibition orders, obstructing public personnel from performing their responsibilities and exercising improper restraint.
Charges against Malik and other BJP leaders were withdrawn in March 2021 as a result of a request made by the Yogi government to have the cases against them withdrawn from the local court.
