OVERVIEW
Understanding The Threat (UTT) was founded by John Guandolo, a former FBI Special Agent who resigned under scandal. UTT markets itself as providing "counterterrorism" training to law enforcement, but its core thesis frames mainstream Islam itself as inherently a threat to the United States. The SPLC has designated Guandolo as an anti-Muslim extremist.
KEY FIGURES
John Guandolo (Founder) — Former FBI Special Agent (~1996-2008), former Marine. Left the FBI amid an internal investigation after he reportedly had a sexual relationship with a confidential source while working an active investigation. These personal scandals have been cited by critics as undermining his credibility.
WHAT UTT TEACHES
- Claims the majority of mosques in America are part of a "jihadi network" — rejected by the FBI and academic experts
- Characterizes mainstream Muslim organizations (CAIR, ISNA) as fronts for the Muslim Brotherhood or Hamas
- Teaches law enforcement to view ordinary Muslim community institutions with suspicion
- Accused CIA Director nominee John Brennan of being a "secret Muslim convert" — a claim with no credible evidence
LAW ENFORCEMENT PUSHBACK
Multiple scheduled trainings have been cancelled after public scrutiny in states including Texas and South Carolina. The FBI itself does not endorse or use UTT training materials. Former FBI agents have publicly distanced themselves from Guandolo's claims.
NETWORK CONNECTIONS
- Center for Security Policy — Echoes and amplifies CSP's "civilization jihad" narrative
- ACT for America — Overlapping speaking circuits
- Chris Gaubatz — Former UTT associate who left to co-found RAIR Foundation USA
